So over the past couple of days, our whole group agreed that our previous idea about two girls moving into a haunted house was too predictable and cliché of a story (and was also too similar to the movie we were trying to base it on) so last class we decided to redo our entire story, and now we have made it into an idea we are all very happy with (which is a miracle)!!! Our group was inspired by many different sources but the main stimulus was a performance I had watched during the AIS-R Sensing Spaces drama festival. It depicted girls being pulled by ropes and presented to an audience of bidders for prostitution, with the person pulling the rope being a woman and the girls who were being presented being tied up, hinting towards the fact that they have been forced into this business. While discussing this with our group (which consists of all girls), we realized we wanted to base our production on this topic because we are all passionate about women’s rights and human trafficking is a very important problem today in the world, and it is an issue we would like to shed light on to our audience. Many movies have also been made on this topic, which inspired us, such as the Taken series. Drawing from these influences, we want to create a performance that gives the audience insight into what it is like to be a woman dealing with human trafficking and the huge emotional and physical impact it can have on women, and the various types of people who allow this disgusting act to occur. Our target audience for this production is adults, people who have the power of stopping something wrong from happening if they witness it, and older teenagers, the people who will make up our next generation and should be informed about the issue of human trafficking which exists in many societies. For both of these target audiences, we wish for them to learn about the various types of people which allow for human trafficking to occur, whether witness, bidders, accomplices, friends of traffickers, etc., so that they are aware about the potential helpers of women trafficking they might be able to confront and stop. We want the audience to greatly sympathize with the story of Talah, an innocent girl who has been forced into something that she doesn’t want to do, so that they become aware of how big an issue the trafficking of women is and how negatively it can affect a person. Maybe after shedding light on this, the adults and teens that make up this generation will get inspired by our performance and will want to shed light on the issue for many others they come in contact with.
The following is the outline for our story:
Girl (Mariyah) goes out to find her missing sister, and all clues point her towards the idea that she has been trafficked.
Talah is broken inside due to trafficking but is eventually found.
Mariyah goes to first witness: Rema was one of the bidders during the selling of prostitution
-dream sequence of bidding going on: black masks
Mariyah goes to second witness: Another prostitute who was with her at the time
-dream sequence
Mariyah goes to third witness: Person who saw Talah get kidnapped
-dream sequence
-Mariyah confronts Yara but she ends up winning and dragging Mariyah away
-Play ends with dream sequence, same as dream sequence after bidding, except now the 3 girls are Mariyah, Rema, Talah and Yara is the pimp
We want to leave the audience with an almost hopeless impact, in order to emphasize on the pain and hopelessness women who are trafficked feel. I’m so happy we used our class time effectively to develop this new story, and I’m really excited to be working with this idea, which we are all comfortable AND passionate about. Things are definitely starting to look better for our group (we have finally learned to work together) !!!
