Over this Eid break, I have been working on my theater research project, in which I have to research a play and create a set design, costume and makeup designs for two characters, and explain my choices. I chose to work on Hairspray, because racism is still an issue that exists today, and therefore I think Hairspray is very relevant musical today’s society and the musical’s theme of equality moved me. I was also attracted to Hairspray because it is a colorful, fun play with an interesting variety of unique characters. The idea that Tracy achieves her dreams as long as she believes she can and tries hard to accomplish them is also an inspiring topic that attracted me to Hairspray. Also, musical theater has always been my favorite genre of plays, which greatly impacted my choice of play. It has been challenging deciding what the characters should look like and how I should create the set design, but I’m trying to resolve these issues by researching and watching the play and also researching set designs.
